OUR FOUNDING CONVICTION
We Love Because God Loves Us.
For years, those words have been more than a tagline for Perfecting Love Charlotte. They are the conviction that inspired this church.
They come from the heart of 1 John 4:18–21.
Depending on the Bible translation you grew up reading, you may know verse 19 as, "We love Him because He first loved us." Other translations render it more simply: "We love because He first loved us."
That difference is worth noticing—but the larger message of the passage is even more important.
John begins with God's love for us. Then he shows us what happens when that love takes root in us. It cannot stop with us. In the very next verses, John makes the connection between loving God and loving our brothers and sisters.
GOD LOVES US FIRST.
HIS LOVE AWAKENS LOVE IN US.
THE LOVE WE HAVE RECEIVED FROM GOD SHOULD BECOME THE LOVE PEOPLE EXPERIENCE THROUGH US.
That's what Pastor Terrance L. Culp heard in this passage. And that conviction became part of the foundation of Perfecting Love Charlotte.
When we say "We Love Because God Loves Us," we're not attempting to rewrite Scripture. We're describing what we believe Scripture calls us to do.
We believe one of the greatest expressions of our love for God is how we love God's people.
And for us, that has practical consequences.
It's why we make room for people wherever they are in life.
It's why questions are welcome.
It's why children are protected and valued.
It's why your person matters more than your performance.
It's why there is room for different expressions of worship.
It's why whether you worship with us in person, online, for a season, or for years, we want to love you well.
Because God's love was never meant to terminate with us.
WE RECEIVE IT.
WE ARE CHANGED BY IT.
AND THEN WE EXTEND IT.
That's what we mean when we say

WHO WE ARE
Perfecting Love Charlotte
Perfecting Love Charlotte is a church built for real people, real life, and real faith.
We are a Christ-centered, love-driven, culturally aware ministry rooted in our foundational passage, 1 John 4:18–21. At our core, we believe love is not a slogan. Love is our theology, our posture, our practice, and our assignment.
Perfecting Love Charlotte was not built around performance, perfection, or religious image. It was built around people — people who are growing, healing, questioning, rebuilding, learning, serving, and becoming. We are a church for those who still believe in God but may be tired of church as usual. We are a church for those who want truth without cruelty, grace without games, and community without pretending.
We are unapologetically Black, deeply inclusive, spiritually honest, and committed to creating space where people can encounter God without having to hide their humanity.
HOW WE WERE BUILT
Our Journey
Perfecting Love Charlotte was birthed from a burden to pastor people with love, truth, and emotional honesty. Since our founding in 2017, our journey has not always looked traditional — and we are no longer apologizing for that.
Like many ministries, the pandemic forced us to reimagine what church could be. But what could have been seen as disruption became revelation. We discovered that ministry is not limited to a building, a pew, or a Sunday morning crowd. Perfecting Love Charlotte became a hybrid and online-reaching ministry that meets people where they are — spiritually, emotionally, and practically.
We are not fighting the season we are in. We are leaning into it.
We understand that people work, travel, raise children, care for families, manage grief, navigate mental health, pursue education, and carry full lives. Our church is built with that awareness. We believe church should help people live, not make them feel guilty for having a life.
WHAT KIND OF CHURCH WE ARE
A Teaching, Healing & Thinking Church
Perfecting Love Charlotte is a teaching church, a healing church, and a thinking church.
We do not run from hard questions. We believe faith should be strong enough to sit with complexity. We talk about Scripture, but we also talk about life. We talk about grief, race, love, trauma, family, justice, disappointment, purpose, and the tension of being human while still believing God.
Our sermons and Bible studies are designed to help people grow in faith without losing themselves in religious performance. We believe God can handle our honesty. We believe questions are not always rebellion. Sometimes questions are the doorway to deeper faith.
We are a church where people can bring their whole selves — their joy, their pain, their doubts, their culture, their history, and their hope.
HOW WE FUNCTION
Modern, Relational, Hybrid Ministry
Perfecting Love Charlotte functions as a modern, relational, hybrid ministry.
That means we value both in-person gathering and digital connection. We understand that the church has left the building — not because the building does not matter, but because the people matter more. Whether someone worships with us in the room, watches online, catches a replay, sends a prayer request, gives digitally, or shares a message with a friend, we believe they are still part of the life and reach of the ministry.
Our worship gatherings are intentionally focused. We believe church does not have to be long to be meaningful. We value excellence, warmth, clarity, and spiritual depth. Our goal is not to impress people with production; our goal is to create an atmosphere where people can hear God, feel seen, and leave strengthened.
We are also a church that values pastoral care, teaching, prayer, generosity, and community impact. We are growing, building, and becoming — and we are doing it with intention.
WHAT WE BELIEVE ABOUT LOVE
Love Is Our Foundation
But love, for us, is not soft sentimentality. Love tells the truth. Love protects dignity. Love makes room. Love confronts harm. Love restores. Love listens. Love serves. Love gives. Love refuses to reduce people to their worst moment.
We believe the love of God is both comforting and corrective. It embraces us where we are, but it also calls us higher.
Perfecting Love Charlotte exists to help people experience that kind of love — the kind of love that heals, matures, challenges, and transforms.
OUR HEART
A Church Where People Can Breathe Again
Our heart is to build:
A church where Black people are affirmed in their God-given dignity.
A church where families can grow.
A church where leaders can be developed.
A church where the wounded can heal.
A church where people who have been mishandled by religion can rediscover God without fear.
A church where worship is real, teaching is relevant, and love is the culture.
FAITH BEYOND THE SANCTUARY
Faith Beyond the Sanctuary
We are committed to serving people in the places where faith and work meet.
We understand the pressure of leadership, professional responsibility, entrepreneurship, career transition, workplace anxiety, burnout, ambition, and the daily challenge of carrying faith into complex organizations and communities.
We believe the Gospel speaks not only to what happens in the sanctuary, but also to what happens in meetings, classrooms, hospitals, offices, businesses, job sites, homes, and every place where people live out their calling.

Six commitments that define who we are, how we think, and how we live together in community.
We Exist to Perfect Love
Love is not simply something we practice; it is who we are.
Because God first loved us, we seek to embody that same love toward every person who enters our community. We believe every individual bears the image of God and deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, and grace.
We embrace people as they are and as they become. We believe the Christian life is a journey of transformation, not instant perfection. God's grace welcomes us where we are, and His Spirit faithfully forms us into who He is calling us to be.
We refuse to reduce people to their past, their pain, or their present struggles. Instead, we walk alongside one another in love, believing discipleship is best experienced in authentic community.
Everything we do is measured by love because we love because He first loved us.
We Are a Thinking Church
We believe that loving God includes loving Him with our minds.
We approach Scripture with reverence, humility, curiosity, and intellectual integrity. We believe faith is strengthened—not weakened—by thoughtful study, honest questions, careful interpretation, and meaningful dialogue.
Because all truth belongs to God, we believe there is no sincere question that faithful inquiry cannot explore. Truth has nothing to fear from honest examination.
We encourage our congregation to wrestle with Scripture, theology, history, science, culture, and lived experience, trusting that God often deepens our faith through faithful exploration.
We Honor Tradition While Engaging the Present
We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us.
We cherish the witness of the historic Church, the wisdom of the Black Church tradition, and the faithful generations who preserved the Gospel through worship, sacrifice, scholarship, and service.
At the same time, we believe the unchanging Gospel must continually be proclaimed in ways that speak clearly to each generation. The message of Jesus Christ never changes, but the Church must faithfully engage the questions, realities, and challenges of the world it serves.
We honor our heritage while remaining open to the Holy Spirit's ongoing work of leading God's people into deeper understanding and more faithful witness.
We Believe Formation Is Greater Than Performance
Our goal is not merely to produce religious people but to form Christlike people.
We reject the idea that spiritual maturity is measured by appearances, performances, or perfection. Instead, we believe genuine transformation happens through a lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit and nurtured within Christian community.
We celebrate progress, practice grace, and trust that God is completing the good work He has begun in each of us.
We Welcome Honest Faith
We believe faith is strong enough to hold both conviction and questions.
Throughout Scripture, God's people lamented, doubted, celebrated, questioned, worshiped, and hoped. We believe God welcomes honest hearts more than rehearsed answers.
Perfecting Love Charlotte is a place where people are free to wrestle with Scripture, ask difficult questions, process life's complexities, and pursue truth without fear of rejection.
Honesty is not the enemy of faith. It is often the pathway to deeper faith.
We Value Both Word and Spirit
We believe God speaks through His written Word and continues to transform lives through the work of the Holy Spirit.
We are committed to faithful biblical teaching, thoughtful interpretation, passionate worship, earnest prayer, and lives marked by the fruit of the Spirit.
We refuse to separate intellectual discipleship from spiritual formation. We desire both informed minds and transformed hearts.
